| Further Information: Reaching up to almost 40mm, this is the largest species of darkling beetle in the Maltese Islands. Emerging to feed on plant matter at night, churchyard beetles remain hidden in damp places (such as under rocks and cave openings) during the day, occasionally being found in cellars and basements. Its robust body paired with its inability to fly make this beetle easy prey for some birds and reptiles but its tough, fused elytra offer a good defense against insect predators. |
